Before the city: the river and Spruce Bluff

The Port St. Lucie Historical Society’s Tales From Our Past describes Indigenous history and the small Spruce Bluff settlement of the 1890s. Its account records Fultz arriving in September 1891 and later community activity including farming, a school and a church.

The same source describes the effect of the severe 1894–95 freeze on early settlers. This is a reminder that the area was not empty before modern development: its history includes people, work and settlements that predate the city’s incorporation.
